About Broken Candy
Broken Candy Confections is a new provider of custom candies, cookies, and other sweets in the Chicago area. Broken Candy is active under Illinois Cottage Law. As I get things going you'll see a bunch of photos and options for custom orders, and announcements about when and where I will be appearing at vendor fairs.
I started baking as a child and has always considered it to be among my super powers. I love to make people happy and to receive compliments! A few years back, in a effort to feel like I had greater control over my life, I began making candies and cookies to distribute to friends and family at the holidays. You know how this goes: after hearing "you should go into business" enough times I decided, why not.
My company is called Broken Candy for two reasons:
1) Most of the sweets are literally broken candy such as brittles, barks, and toffee. Many of the sweets use broken bits like candy canes, chocolate bark, pretzels, and cookies.
2) We live in a broken world. I am a person who is trying to mend herself and maybe a little bit of the world.
Some other things I want you to know:
- All excess treats are donated to a local community center that serves those experiencing homelessness.
- Most of the items that I make are fairly simple and take minimal skill. Seriously. I want everyone to know how much fun it is to heat sugar to 300 degrees, and transfer it to a silicone mat. However, we all have our own skills and our own schedules. I make beautiful sweet trays, bagged candies, and custom confections so that you don't have to. If you bring my candies to a party and want to take credit, well I encourage that!
- I use real ingredients. I've never made anything sugar free, gluten free, or allergy free. Other people do that better than I can. My sweets are produced in a kitchen that uses flour, sugar, nuts, soy, and probably other things that will cause an allergic reaction. I have allergies too, so I understand if you choose to have your candy orders fulfilled by someone who's going to do a better job.
- I am happy to ship sweets that are packaged in bags, balls jars, boxes, and other bulk type packaging. I cannot ship trays.
- For now, all orders are custom. As I share photos I'll give some idea of pricing, and when we discuss your order I'll offer a price based on time, ingredients, and packaging.
- Speaking of packaging... Plastic is unavoidable but I'm trying really hard to avoid it. When we discuss your order please keep in mind that I am happy to use ball jars, paper bags, even your own reusable packaging in place of plastic. However, I can't void plastic in it's entirety, yet.
